The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) recently completed Phase II of the I-75 at I-24 Interchange Modification, less than three years after construction began.
Phase II continued the widening and modernization of the interchange. Work included widening each interchange ramp to three lanes, replacing two bridges over the railroad on I-75, widening I-75 from the interchange to East Brainerd Road, widening I-24 from the interchange to Germantown Road, replacing the Moore Road and McBrien Road bridges over I-24, and improving the North and South Terrace exit ramps.
The phase used an alternative delivery contracting method called design-build that combines portions of design and construction into a single contract to allow the design-builder to introduce innovation, reduce costs, and shorten construction timelines.
“Using the design‑build approach allowed us to accelerate delivery of this complex project and work more efficiently with our contractor and design partners from day one,” TDOT Region 2 Director Danny Oliver said. “That collaboration helped streamline the process and bring critical improvements online faster, enhancing reliability for drivers, reducing delays, and strengthening the freight network that keeps Tennessee moving.”
I-75 at I-24, located in Chattanooga, is one of the most heavily traveled corridors in the state. The interchange now is fully open to traffic.
