The U.S. Department of Transportation announced more than $1.1 billion in funding is available for railroad crossing safety this coming fiscal year.
The money, part of the Federal Railroad Administration’s (FRA) Railroad Crossing Elimination Grant Program, focuses on railroad crossing projects that improve safety and mobility, eliminate railroad crossings frequently blocked by trains, and educate communities about crossing safety issues. Nationally, more than 300 fatalities and 2,000 incidents happen at railroad crossings each year.
“Under (Transportation )Secretary (Sean) Duffy’s safety-first agenda, protecting Americans from railroad crossing collisions is a top priority,” FRA Administrator David Fink said. “From installing automated equipment to eliminating unsafe crossings, we are committed to delivering a safer railroad system for Americans.”
The department said funds were available for projects building overpasses or underpasses, upgrading safety technology at crossings, relocating tracks to close a grade crossing and educating citizens on how to cross a train track safely.
“The safety of American families utilizing our transportation infrastructure is my top priority. This Administration is always working towards improving the safety of our transportation networks, including our vital rail network that keeps our economy humming,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy said. “Our investment improves the resilience of our infrastructure and protects workers and travelers alike utilizing American roads.”
