The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday for the approximately $54.9 million Maffa Way/Mystic Avenue Bridge superstructure replacement project in Boston and Somerville.
The project was completed nearly nine months ahead of schedule.
“By completing this project months ahead of schedule, we are reducing disruptions for residents and businesses while improving transit access, road safety and connectivity in Boston and Somerville,” Gov. Maura Healey said. “This is exactly the kind of coordinated, results-driven work we are delivering across Massachusetts to modernize infrastructure and move projects forward.”
The project replaced two deteriorated bridge superstructures that carry vehicles and pedestrians over Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s Orange Line and Commuter Rail and made repairs to the substructure of each bridge. The new bridges feature bus-only lanes, protected bike lanes and dedicated sidewalks.
New bus lanes were added on Mystic Avenue westbound and Lombardi Street southbound. The bus lanes on Broadway eastbound between Lombardi Street and Sullivan Station and the turn lane between Sullivan Station from Mystic Ave were upgraded and expanded.
Transit signal priority was installed and activated at the intersection of Mystic Ave at Grand Union Boulevard and Lombardi St and the intersection of Broadway at Lombardi Street.
