The Virginia Port Authority (VPA) board of commissioners have selected Sarah McCoy to serve as Port of Virginia CEO. She has served as interim CEO and executive director since January.

“We spoke to many very capable and experienced leaders inside and outside the maritime industry across the globe” Bill Kirk, board chairman, said. “We are very fortunate to have the best candidate for the job right here at the VPA. Sarah is an experienced and perceptive business leader and has the vision and skillset to lead the Port of Virginia into the next decade as we continue our work to make the commonwealth of Virginia the best place to locate your business.”

McCoy has worked for VPA since 2014. She was general counsel from 2017 to 2022 before becoming chief administrative officer. In both roles she oversaw contracts and enterprise governance, legal strategy, risk management, procurement, and human resources. She led the team that helped renegotiate the port’s lease for Virginia International Gateway, which expires in 2065, in 2025.

The Virginia Port Authority is a political subdivision that owns and operates four general cargo facilities and leases two more. The Port of Virginia contributes $63 billion annually to Virginia’s gross domestic product.
