The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) recently awarded 19 projects $3 million in Transportation Management Associations (TMA) Grant Program funding.

Grants were awarded to 13 transportation management associations, one TMA membership association, and one consulting firm, for various transportation projects including improving bus stop infrastructure, expanding ferry service, and operating and publicizing shuttles.

The program reduces single occupancy vehicle travel, reduces emissions, encourages mode shift, and expands mobility.

“Our investments in community transportation are about connecting people to jobs, schools, and services today and into the future,” Transportation Secretary and CEO Monica Tibbits-Nutt said. “The projects supported through the TMA Program are vital to building a more reliable, resilient, and accessible transportation network. I look forward to seeing this program continue to grow and serve our communities for years to come.”

The largest grant, $500,000, was awarded to Seaport TMA to operate ferry service between North Station and Pier 10 in Boston.

TMAs are membership-based organizations that focus on improving transportation options and infrastructure within a specific region or community. They typically are collaborations between local businesses, government agencies, and community stakeholders. They implement programs and initiatives aimed at promoting alternative transportation methods and provide transportation-related services including shuttle programs, carpool matching services, and commuter incentives.
