The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) recently awarded $28 million in fiscal year 2026 Local Freight Impact Fund grants to 23 projects in 11 counties. Forty-eight grant applications were received.
The program helps New Jersey’s counties and municipalities fund projects that emphasize and enhance the safe movement of large truck traffic, promote economic development, repair aging infrastructure, and support new transportation opportunities.
The projects include 17 roadway preservation projects, three truck safety and mobility projects, one bridge preservation project, one pavement preservation project, and one new construction project.
“New Jersey is a global hub for commerce with seaports, airports, and rail yards that are critical to our regional and national economies,” NJDOT Commissioner Priya Jain said. “These Local Freight Impact Fund grants allow counties and municipalities to make improvements to local roads and bridges that carry commercial truck traffic, supporting a strong state and regional economy for years to come.”
Applications are evaluated for a variety of criteria including connectivity to freight nodes, crash frequency involving large trucks, percentage of large truck traffic, overall traffic volume, and
existing conditions.
Projects that fall into six categories for funding: truck safety and mobility, bridge preservation, roadway preservation, pavement preservation, pedestrian safety and new construction.
