The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) recently awarded the town of Phillipsburg a $1.2 million NJDOT Local Aid program grant to help the community repair a local road that was damaged by sinkholes in February.
“When the unforeseen happens and the safety of the public is at risk, the New Jersey Department of Transportation leverages its strong partnerships, quick action and access to resources to restore safe access for motorists, residents and businesses,” NJDOT Acting Commissioner Priya Jain said. “No community should have to face unbudgeted and unexpected infrastructure challenges like this alone, and a well-funded Local Aid program ensures we are ready to step in and help communities address critical infrastructure needs.”
Two sinkholes developed at the intersection of Summit Avenue and Lewis Street on Feb. 16, damaging the roadway and displacing the residents of eight homes. The houses show signs of instability and have been deemed unsafe.
Temporary roadway repairs have been completed, and Aqua New Jersey is in the process of repairing a damaged watermain.
The cause of the sinkholes is currently unknown but it is thought to be the result of aging infrastructure and a pipe collapse. Investigations will determine what needs done to ensure the houses are safe for residents to return.
