The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announced the launch of LIFTOff Louisiana, an advanced air mobility initiative designed to help the Federal Aviation Administration integrate next-generation aircraft into the National Airspace System.
LIFTOff Louisiana will provide the FAA with a Gulf Coast site to test at the Houma-Terrebonne Airport, one of the nation’s busiest hubs for helicopter operations. The location provides an environment spanning multiple states and population centers, industrial regions and coastal communities. Additionally, the airport’s high air traffic volume provides a real-world setting for evaluating how emerging aircraft can operate safely alongside helicopters and fixed-wing operations.
“As technology continues to adapt, we want Louisiana to be at the forefront of aviation innovation— LIFTOff Louisiana does that,” Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry said. “I’m excited to see the opportunities this program will pave for aviation in our State and throughout the Nation.”
Officials said the region combines industrial and logistics demands with variable coastal weather and a mix of urban, rural and tribal communities. Findings from LIFTOff will help regulators validate safety concepts, identify regulatory gaps and develop rules for next-generation aircraft that can be used throughout America.
LIFTOff Louisiana’s planned operations will evaluate cargo and personnel transportation, officials said. The initiative includes aircraft developers BETA Technologies and Elroy Air, as well as established operators Bristow Group and Metro Aviation. The program partners will provide advanced platforms for phased testing, while operators will contribute expertise gained through operations.
