The South Dakota Transportation Commission recently awarded 40 local bridge projects approximately $3.5 million in funds through two programs.
Twelve projects will receive approximately $2.08 million through the 2027 – 2030 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) federal highway funding. Awardees are in the city of Gary and the counties of Codington, Deuel, Grant, Gregory, McCook, Roberts, Spink and Yankton.
Twenty-four projects were approved to be added by addendum to the 2026-2029 STIP for approximately $1.4 million. Applications were for Bridge Improvement Grant (BIG) preliminary engineering survey and hydraulic studies. Awardees are the counties of Beadle, Butte, Codington, Deuel, Grant, Hughes, Lincoln, Minnehaha, Moody, Perkins, Roberts, Union and Yankton.
Most counties were awarded funding for more than one project.
“Safe and efficient access to destinations such as schools, hospitals, farms, and ranchlands are critical to our way of life in South Dakota,” South Dakota Department of Transportation Secretary Joel Jundt said. “With over 80,000 miles of roadway and 5,700 bridges across our state, sound and timely investments like these ensure our communities continue to thrive both today and into the future.”
The department received 108 applications.
The application deadline for the next round of the BIG program is Jan. 2 for the Preservation and Replacement category.
