The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), North America’s largest transportation network, recently opened three modernized elevators at the Jamaica-179 St F station in Queens.
“Jamaica–179 St is a vital terminal station that serves thousands of riders in Queens every day,” MTA Chief Accessibility Officer Quemuel Arroyo said. “Replacing these elevators reflects the MTA’s ongoing commitment to building a transit system that is accessible, reliable, and usable for everyone.”
On weekdays, the station serves more than 13,000 riders. The elevators connect the street to the mezzanine, the mezzanine to the Manhattan-bound F platform, and the mezzanine to the terminal.
Work included fully replacing the elevator cab and associated equipment along with the elevator head house glass and canopy at street level. All elevator machine rooms, electrical and mechanical equipment also were replaced. Modifications were made to the shaft and pit, and upgrades were made to the remote monitoring equipment, fire alarm system, intercom system and cameras.
The elevators are as part of the agency’s larger accessibility and safety upgrades efforts. Its 2025-2029 Capital Plan invests nearly $7.1 billion in station accessibility. To date, MTA has completed 20 elevator replacements this year with elevator replacement projects underway in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan.
