The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) announced the winners of more than $2 million in grants to support improvements at nine airports across the state.

The grants are part of ALDOT’s Alabama Airport Improvement Funding Program, which provides up to 50 percent of a project’s cost as incurred by the airport’s owner. Eligible projects may include land acquisition, runway upgrades, facility repairs, maintenance, and operational improvements, and grants provide financial assistance or technical support to airport projects across the state.
“Local airports are critical to connecting our communities and supporting Alabama’s economy,” Frank Farmer, Bureau Chief of ALDOT’s Aeronautics Bureau, said. “This funding helps strengthen infrastructure, improve safety and support essential air services in all parts of the state.”
The grants included $2,000 for the city of Abbeville for the Abbeville Municipal Airport for the construction of a 5-unit T-hanger, which joins with $2,000 in airport sponsor funds and $76,000 in FAA funds. Florala Municipal Airport will receive $5,412 for the construction of a fuel farm that will also receive $5,413 from the city of Florala, and more than $205,000 from the FAA. William E. Stewart Jackson Municipal Airport will receive $488,559 to construct a 10-unit T-Hanger which will also be funded by $488,559 from the city of Jackson.
The state said planning for the 2027 funding is already underway, and the grants reflect the state’s commitment to invest in its air transportation system, which supports emergency response, commerce, tourism and more.
