Virginia program would allocate $28.5B for transportation projects

The Virginia Commonwealth Transportation Board approved the Six-Year Improvement Program on Thursday for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the Department of Rail and Public Transportation.

The program will allocate $28.5 billion to fund more than 4,300 transportation projects over the next six fiscal years beginning on July 1.

The program funds the following:

Public transportation programs, the Virginia Railway Express, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, and transportation demand management programs will be allocated $930 million.

The State of Good Repair Bridge Program will be allocated $500 million to improve 43 VDOT and locality-maintained bridges.

The Revenue Sharing Program will be allocated $239 million for 143 projects that will be matched dollar for dollar by localities.

The Transportation Alternatives Program will be allocated $85 million for 57 nontraditional transportation projects.

The State of Good Repair Paving Program will be allocated $78 million to improve deficient VDOT and locality-maintained pavements.

Twenty-one projects that received Congressionally Directed Spending through the Federal Appropriations Bill will receive $63 million.

Rail planning and freight rail programs and projects will be allocated $19.7 million.

New innovation and technology transportation improvements will be allocated $11 million.

VDOT’s annual budget for fiscal year 2027 is $9 billion.
