The NJ TRANSIT Board of Directors recently approved $22.2 million and 10 percent for contingencies to complete the engineering and design work for the extension of the Secaucus-Meadowlands Transitway.
The proposed extension would accommodate multiple vehicle forms excluding rail and would use the former Boonton rail line and the Bergen Arches. Transit modes would be configured so they are capable of being implemented with zero emission vehicles or can be transitioned to zero emission vehicles in the future. Modes also must be capable of being scalable to fully autonomous vehicle operation.
“Advancing this innovative project is an important step in providing the kind of superior service befitting our customers and the Meadowlands Sports and Entertainment Complex, a world-class entertainment venue,” NJ TRANSIT Board Chairwoman Fran O’Connor said.
The board entered into a $3.5 million contract in 2021 with engineering firm HNTB for conceptual development and preliminary design. Last week’s funding approval extends the contract to include the design of a dedicated right of way between Secaucus and Jersey City with multiple stops.
The Transitway would increase service capacity to move riders between the Meadowlands Sports and Entertainment Complex and Secaucus Junction Station and would create a new service corridor in one of the state’s most densely populated areas.
