Five western state departments of transportation (DOTs) recently received top honors in America’s Transportation Awards competition.

Projects were recognized in three categories: Best Use of Technology and Innovation, Operations Excellence, and Quality of Life/Community Development.

Twenty-seven projects in 13 western states were nominated, and nine projects received the honors. Among the winners were projects that contributed to economic growth and improved driver safety on winter roads.

The California Department of Transportation won awards in three categories, the most of any department.

The awards are sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), AAA, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

“State DOTs are committed to making America safer, better and stronger by improving connections between communities both large and small, urban and rural,” John Schroer, president of AASHTO and commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Transportation, said. “The transportation projects in this competition are part of a national multimodal network that is moving millions of people and tons of goods where they need to go every day.”

Winners in other regions will be announced this summer.

Twelve projects nationwide will compete for a grand prize and the people’s choice award, and two departments will win $10,000 in cash.
