The Port of Seattle recently announced that a solar array is currently being installed at Fisherman’s Terminal as part of their goal of becoming the greenest, most energy efficient port in North America.
The array will be completed early next year and will have the capacity to produce 11,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of energy.
The port’s commissioners also passed Tuesday an Energy and Sustainability Motion that enforces its commitment to renewable energy, enhanced sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The motion has five directives. The first is to help the port meet its goals through the establishment of a sustainability evaluation framework to increase transparency. The second is to establish a solar array at Pier 69 as the first pilot project under the framework. If the project is approved, the array would produce 320,000 kWh of power and would be partially funded by the Washington State Department of Commerce.
Additionally, the motion would seek to put resources in place to track greenhouse gas reduction, expand the port’s goal to become carbon neutral or carbon negative by 2050, and increase collaboration with the Northwest Seaport Alliance’s Sustainability Center of Expertise.
“Today’s action reinforces the Port of Seattle’s commitment to sustainable economic growth and should encourage expanded innovation in green technology,” Port Commissioner Courtney Gregoire said.
The port also operates the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
