Alabama State Port Authority’s Terminal Railroad – Alabama State Docks (TASD) recently received safety achievement awards from the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA).

ASLRRA presented TASD with two President’s Awards for its commitment to a safety culture.

“To be awarded two President’s Awards speaks to the safety culture developed and embraced by every member of the Terminal Railway,” TASD General Manager Cliff Melton said. “I am extremely proud of the prevailing good attitude found everywhere in our system and the hard work our people put forth every day.”

The President’s Award recognizes short line railroads must either have the best safety rate measured by the lowest accident frequency rate per man hour below the national average or have no accidents.

TASD qualified in both categories and won the Best Safety Rate for 150,000-200,000 Man Hours Worked in Calendar Year 2016 award and the Most of Hours of Injury-Free Operation.

To qualify for a President’s Award, railways must also be recipients of the Jake Award, an award that recognizes ASLRRA members with outstanding safety achievements. Class II and Class III railways must have a better-than-average injury-frequency rate reported to the Federal Railway Administration.

Since 2007, TASD has won five Jake Awards.
