The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) opened the application period on Tuesday for the Community Charging phase of the federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. Applications close March 12.
The state will invest $11 million to build EV chargers in the Central Pennsylvania region, a 26- county area. All publicly available locations within the region are eligible to apply, and local transportation planning agencies will prioritize investment.
“We appreciate PennDOT’s work to bring this funding opportunity to Centre County and help turn local planning efforts into investments in our communities,” Pam Adams, Centre County Metropolitan Planning Organization secretary, said. “Strategically located chargers can serve residents and visitors while supporting our downtowns and local businesses.”
PennDOT is making funding available by region, and this is the third region. The state’s first NEVI station opened in December 2023. Since, nearly 50 stations have been built, and 41 more are in various stages of planning and construction. The stations have supported more than 17.3 million estimated miles driven and more than 146,000 charging sessions that reduced carbon dioxide emissions by more than 3,700 metric tons.
Pennsylvania has directed more than $100 million in federal funding to build public EV charging stations.
