The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) recently opened the application period for the fiscal year 2027-28 Sustainable Transportation Planning Grant program.
Sustainable Transportation Planning Grants are composed of four grant categories, and the agency awards approximately $34.9 million in state and federal funding annually to cities, counties, transit agencies, local and regional planning agencies, and Native American tribal governments. The goal is to support sustainable strategies that help the state achieve greenhouse gas reduction targets, and enhance safety and mobility across the state’s transportation network.
Eligible sustainable transportation planning projects include projects that enhance multimodal transportation, help underserved communities become more resilient to natural disasters and extreme weather, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Beginning this week, Caltrans will host application workshops. Resources and application materials can be found on the agency’s website, and the agency will provide applicants with technical assistance though the application deadline.
The Sustainable Transportation Planning Grant program awards funding through Senate Bill 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, the State Highway Account, the Federal Transit Administration, and the Federal Highway Administration.
The deadline to apply is Oct. 9. Applications will be reviewed beginning this fall, and grants will be awarded in the spring.
