The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced municipalities across the state will receive $38 million to improve traffic safety through traffic signals across the state.
Eighty-six municipalities in 31 counties will receive a total of $38 million as part of the Green Light-Go Program. The grants are provided as reimbursements to municipalities for projects that improve efficiency and operations of existing traffic signals. Funded through the state’s FY 2026-2027 budget, eligible projects include installation of light-emitting diode (LED) technology, traffic signal retiming, special event traffic planning, traffic signal monitoring and upgrades to modern signal technologies.
“Under Governor Shapiro’s leadership, we’re working to serve the people of our Commonwealth by improving the services that make a real difference in their lives,” PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll said. “The safety improvements supported by the Green Light-Go program will help municipalities keep Pennsylvanians moving safely and efficiently. I’m proud that PennDOT continues to partner with communities to deliver real results.”
Communities receiving grants included Bethel Park which will receive $212,110 to modernize signal equipment at the intersections of South Park Road and Industrial Boulevard, Highland Road and Oxford Drive, Library Road (Route 88) and Oxford Drive; Spring Township which will receive $1,028,616.62 for traffic signal modernization and safety improvements at a number of intersections; Marcus Hook Borough which received $62,944 for modernization upgrades at 10th Street and Market Street; and the city of Pittsburgh which received $1,533,315.69 to replace outdated traffic signals at Bingham Street and 10th Street, Butler Street and Main Street, East Liberty Boulevard and Larimer Avenue.
Under Gov. Josh Shapiro’s administration, $134 million has been distributed to municipalities through the program, and over 1,700 traffic signals have been upgraded.
