Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey said two transportation projects in the state have received more than $26.5 million in U.S. Department of Transportation grants.

Part of the department’s Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) program, the grants will fund transportation connections in Malden, Yarmouth and Barnstable, as well as support roadway safety, reduce congestion and improve accessibility.

“We’re grateful to bring more than $26 million in federal funding home to Massachusetts to improve safety, reduce congestion and make it easier for people to get where they need to go,” Healey said. “These investments will help modernize important transportation corridors in Malden and on Cape Cod while creating safer roads for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. We’re proud to partner with local communities and our federal delegation to deliver projects that strengthen our infrastructure and improve quality of life.”

The City of Malden will receive nearly $1.6 million for planning and designing the reconstruction of Route 99, including modernizing traffic signals, improving traffic flow, enhancing pedestrian safety, reducing crashes and upgrading stormwater infrastructure. Another $25 million was awarded to the Town of Yarmouth and the Cape Cod Commission to improve three miles of Route 28 between Yarmouth and Barnstable and address high-crash locations while improving pedestrian and ADA accessibility, reducing congestion and strengthening a corridor across Cape Cod.

The awards will build on the state’s continued investment into transportation infrastructure, including the $20.7 billion five-year Capital Investment Plan supporting safety and reliability projects.

“These federal awards are an important investment in safer, more reliable transportation connections for residents, businesses, and visitors in Massachusetts,” Interim Secretary of Transportation and MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng said. “MassDOT is proud to have worked closely with our municipal and regional partners in Yarmouth, Barnstable, Malden, and the Cape Cod Commission to support these applications and help move these important projects forward. We are grateful to the Healey-Driscoll Administration, our federal delegation and USDOT for recognizing the value of these investments.”
