Washington State Ferries (WSF), a division of the Washington State Department of Transportation, recently partnered with ABB, an electrification and automation technology company, to support the design and construction of five new hybrid-electric, 160-auto-capacity ferries.
“Big picture, this contract with ABB is about rebuilding our fleet and restoring reliable service to our customers,” said Matt von Ruden, WSF system electrification program administrator. “ABB’s specialized knowledge and expertise helps reduce risk and ensure performance in the design, construction and delivery of our new hybrid-electric ferries.”
The partnership is part of WSF commitment to achieving zero emissions by 2050.
ABB will design a complete propulsion system, oversee the delivery of equipment, and offer expertise in equipment installation and commissioning. It also will train WSF’s crews on the operation and maintenance of the new systems.
WSF is the largest ferry system in the United States. Annually, it burns 19 million gallons of diesel fuel. The agency’s electrification program will build 16 hybrid vessels, retire 13 diesel ferries, retrofit six current diesel ferries to hybrid electric, and add charging power to 16 terminals.
WSF invited shipyards in May to bid on the construction of five ferries. It will select one or two shipbuilders in 2025. The ferries will be delivered in 2028.
