The New York State Department of Transportation recently completed $48.2 million in projects on Long Island.

The projects enhance safety, improve traffic flow and strengthen the resiliency of several key bridges

Projects included:

A new Hospital Road Bridge was constructed over Sunrise Highway. The bridge includes 12-foot-wide shoulders to accommodate bicycle and pedestrian traffic, sidewalks, and an additional travel lane.

Hospital Road’s intersections with both the North and South Service Roads were reconstructed. Work included an overpass, turn lanes, crosswalks, and custom-built traffic signals that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The concrete decks of five bridges that carry the Long Island Expressway over local roads were refurbished. Work included stripping the top layer of concrete and replacing it with ultra-high performance concrete to reduce regular maintenance and extend the service life by two decades.

The Sunrise Highway bridge over Hubbards Path in the town of Babylon was rehabilitated with many structural components being removed and replaced with 210,000 pounds of new steel rebar and more than 2,000 tons of concrete.

Work on the six bridges was in stages behind concrete barriers, creating minimal traffic disruption and ensuring the safely for the highway workers.

More than 600 jobs were created.
