U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg recently recommended 18 large rail and bus rapid transit projects in 11 states to receive $4.45 billion in President Joe Biden’s Fiscal Year 2024 Budget Request to Congress.

The projects, which require a local funding match, seek funding through the Federal Transit Administration’s Capital Investment Grants and Expedited Project Delivery Pilot programs.

The programs support new large transit capital projects that are locally planned, implemented, and operated.

The projects include:

  • The Los Angeles Westside Subway Section 2 and Section 3 rail projects, $643 million, to connect downtown Los Angeles with the Westside
  • The Chicago Transit Authority Red Line Extension project, $350 million, to add 5.6 miles of heavy rail to Chicago’s Far South Side
  • The Utah Department of Transportation FrontRunner Strategic Double Track project, $316.8 million, to purchase 10 new train sets and double-tracking sections of the current system
  • The Minneapolis Southwest Light Rail Transit project, $291.9 million, to add 14.5 miles to the existing METRO Green Line
  • The Seattle Lynwood Link Light Rail extension project, $250.7 million, to extend the light rail system from Northgate station in King County to the Lynnwood City Center Station in Snohomish County

Four of the recommended projects have existing construction grant agreements.
