The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recently presented the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) with Excellence in Teamwork Award at the agency’s Administrator’s Award Ceremony in Washington, D.C.

RIDOT was recognized for its Route 6/10 Interchange Project in Providence.

The $410 million Route 6/10 Interchange project completely rebuilt the interchange by replacing seven structurally deficient bridges and roads and improving traffic flow to reduced vehicle emissions.

RIDOT is in the process of building nine bridges. The flyover bridge from Route 10 North to Route 6 West opened in 2021.

The interchange carries approximately 100,000 vehicles daily, and the project is the largest Design-Build Project in the department’s history.

The design-build process allows design and construction activities to take place at the same time.

“RIDOT has been successfully using design-build methodology for the last seven years for complex, large-scale projects,” RIDOT Director Peter Alviti, Jr. said. “This award validates RIDOT’s use of design-build contracts to provide a better final project for the taxpayers of Rhode Island.”

The award also recognizes the FHWA Rhode Island Division staff and the 6/10 Constructors Joint Venture design-build team. FHWA credits the project’s cost-saving innovations, green technology deployment and Every Day Counts initiatives for the progress the projects has made.
