The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will distribute approximately $15 million in Automated Red-Light Enforcement (ARLE) grants to 36 safety projects in 32 municipalities statewide.

Fines from red-light violations at 36 intersections in Philadelphia fund the ARLE program that aims to improve safety at intersections where data shows red-light running has been an issue. Under state law, projects improving safety, reducing congestion, and enhancing mobility are eligible for funding.

PennDOT received 151 applications, totaling $46 million. An eight-member committee selected projects based on criteria, including cost, safety benefits and effectiveness, and local and regional impact.

Since its creation in 2010, the program has awarded $127.79 million to fund 537 projects.

Projects receiving funding in this round include:

The city of Philadelphia was awarded $7 million for the Citywide Intersection Modifications, Modern Roundabouts, Bike Network Curb Separation, and Citywide Traffic Calming programs.

Penn Hills Township in Allegheny County was awarded $565,292 for traffic signal replacement at Frankstown Road and Beulah Road.

Hanover Borough in York County was awarded $487,287 for Downtown Route 94/116/194 Traffic Congestion and Pedestrian Safety Improvements.

Montoursville Borough in Lycoming County was awarded $465,000 for State Route 2014 and Walnut Street traffic signal replacement.
