Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) held a ribbon cutting ceremony on May 29 to commemorate the installation of Next Generation Fare Gates at all 12 BART stations in Contra Costa County, Calif.
Installation is part of BART’s system wide plan to enhance safety, accessibility, and the overall rider experience.
The gates feature cutting-edge security, faster processing technology, transparent barriers, and user-centered design elements. They accommodate all passengers, including those with mobility devices, strollers, and luggage, and will enhance reliability and accessibility, and reduce fare evasion.
“I am thankful for the opportunity to showcase these fare gates, which are just one example of our new approach to safety and security on BART,” BART Director Matt Rinn, who represents Pleasant Hill/Contra Costa Centre Station, said. “Pleasant Hill/Contra Costa Centre Station is a big part of the community, and I appreciate the opportunity to showcase the station and what it’s all about.”
Event attendees included U.S. Rep. Mark DeSaulnier (R-CA), BART Board President Mark Foley, East Bay Leadership Council President and CEO Mark Orcutt, Metropolitan Transportation Commission Chairwoman Sue Noack, and Contra Costa Transportation Authority and Contra Costa Supervisor Ken Carlson.
BART plans to complete fare gate upgrades at all 50 stations in the system by year’s end.
