Amtrak recently pledged to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its network by 2045 and will increase energy efficiency and implement renewable fuels and energy to accomplish this goal.

The move is part of other goals Amtrak has set to combat climate change.

The company will achieve 100 percent carbon-free electricity by 2030 by focusing on energy efficiency upgrades that reduce consumption. It also gradually will use carbon-free electricity from renewable energy generation and power purchase agreements.

The company will collaborate with state partners and experts on innovation and research of fuel cells, hydrogen, batteries, and other zero-emission technologies.

“Not only are trains convenient and comfortable, they are also one of the most sustainable modes of transportation,” Amtrak CEO Stephen Gardner said. “With new equipment, modernized stations, and net zero emissions, Amtrak can lead the drive toward sustainable transportation throughout the nation.”

Amtrak’s FY21 Sustainability Report and Performance Scorecard includes details on ways the company will reduce energy consumption, emissions, and waste, as well as performance metrics for greenhouse gas emissions, electricity use, recycling, and diesel fuel use. It will achieve this through its Sustainability and Climate Resilience program.
