The Pennsylvania Military Community Enhancement Commission (PMCEC) recently awarded more than $221,000 to two development authorities for transportation and safety improvements at military installations.

The Philadelphia Authority for Industrial Development received $148,250. It will use the funding to have the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation perform a structural, mechanical, and electrical inspection of the Lift Bridge, spanning the channel of the Navy-owned Reserve basin in Philadelphia.

The Navy uses the Reserve basin for Navy Inactive Ship Maintenance and Naval Surface Warfare Center activities.

Naval Support Activity Philadelphia provides support services to Navy units situated at the Philadelphia Navy Yard Annex.

The Cumberland County Industrial Development Authority received $73,102. It will use the funding to have the department conduct a multimodal transportation study at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle to improve a narrow two-lane road connecting US-11 and Claremont Road that accesses the Carlisle Barracks.

The United States Army War College in Carlisle provides senior military officers and civilians graduate-level instruction to prepare them for senior leadership assignments and responsibilities.

“Transportation safety is critical in all walks of life, but particularly when it involves members of our armed forces,” said Gov. Tom Wolf.

PMCEC supports 13 military installations and projects that enhance the value of local military installations.
