On Friday, the Port Authority of New Jersey announced that one of three passenger gates at Newark Liberty International Airport’s Terminal A will be closed starting Sept. 30, as the terminal undergoes the final stage of its replacement.

A new state-of-the art Terminal A is scheduled to open in spring 2022, the Port Authority said.

“This is a necessary step in delivering a world-class airport able to handle future passenger growth and improve the customer experience,” Newark Liberty General Manager James Gill said. “We are working with our airport partners to keep flight operations running smoothly. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we continue to move closer to the unveiling of the new Terminal A.”

Gates in the A1 Concourse area of Terminal A will be demolished as part of a redevelopment project. The closure of the A1 area’s six gates will result in a shift in flight operations that could result in increased wait times, the port authority said. Passengers are urged to arrive at least two hours prior to their scheduled departure times for the next six months.

Air Canada and JetBlue will shift flights to the two other Terminal A gate areas. JetBlue will also shift some flights to Terminal B. American Airlines, Alaska Airline and United Express will continue to operate out of Terminal A2 and A3 concourses.

Once finished the A1 area will have expanded gate capacity, with 21 gates next spring, and another 12 gates by the end of 2022, the port authority said.

The $2.7 billion Terminal A Redevelopment Program is designed to replace the nearly 50-year-old Terminal A with a new, larger terminal measuring 1,000,000 square feet, with 33 new gates. Additionally, the project includes new roadway and airside improvements, as well as a new six-level, 3,000-car parking garage and a centralized care rental facility.
