The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey recently shortlisted four teams to design, build, operate and maintain an AirTrain at Newark Liberty International Airport.

The four teams passed a review process that examined past project experience, approach to customer experience, team approach and structure, financial capability, and other factors.

The teams are Liberty AirTrain Partners, Liberty Integrated Connectors, Liberty Mobility Express, and Tutor Perini/Parsons JV.

The winning team will replace an AirTrain that opened in 1996. In recent years, it has become outdated and unreliable. The new system, a 2.5-mile elevated guideway, will use modern technology and enhance the customer experience for passengers at Newark Liberty.

“A best-in-class airport needs a best-in-class rail link that will enhance the travel experience and provide completely reliable, appealing, comfortable, and quick access to the airport,” Rick Cotton, Port Authority executive director, said. “The new AirTrain will be a perfect complement to the new world-class Terminal A, which will open next year.”

The new system will connect to the new 1 million square foot terminal replacing the existing Terminal A and the new rental car facility. It is a vital component of the modernization of Newark Liberty.

Groundbreaking for the project is expected to begin mid-2022.
