Legislation seeking to build connected transportation routes introduced in House

Reps. Chris Pappas (D-NH), Dan Lipinski (D-IL) and Jared Huffman (D-CA) introduced last week a measure to help build connected, active-transportation routes they said would support community health and economic growth.

The Connecting America’s Active Transportation System Act provides $500 million for a federal grant program to enhance trails, sidewalks, and bikeways.

“Smart infrastructure connects Americans with the people and places most important to them,” Pappas said. “This legislation will expand our active transportation networks, providing additional ways to knit communities together, support recreation, and respect our environment. It also makes good economic sense, as these strategic investments in infrastructure throughout the state will bolster local economies and enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.”

If the legislation is included in the House of Representatives’ reauthorization of the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act (FAST), the legislators noted that it would help provide resources and policy changes to deliver a 21st-century transportation system.

The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy supports the bill, acknowledging the nation’s largest trails organization dedicated to connecting people and communities by creating a nationwide network of public trails.

Pappas biked along the Mt. Washington Valley Rec Path with the Mount Washington Trails Association earlier this year to learn more about ongoing efforts to expand active transportation networks and improve access to New Hampshire’s historic sites.
