The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) recently awarded the Transit Authority of River City (TARC), the major public transportation provider for the Louisville, Ky., metro area, a nearly $17.3 million competitive federal grant.

TARC will use the funds to upgrade its aging fleet of 227 buses with fuel-efficient models.

The investment will allow TARC to improve the reliability and efficiency of service while positively impacting the economic development of the Greater Louisville region, Ferdinand L. Risco Jr., TARC executive director, said.

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) contacted the FTA on behalf of his constituents.

“Working with TARC, I was proud to help deliver this major federal grant award directly benefiting thousands of Kentucky families,” McConnell said. “The aging TARC buses put an excessive strain on the city and the tens of thousands of Kentuckians who ride it every day. With an advanced fleet of safe, fuel-efficient, and cost-effective buses, TARC will be in a better position than ever to help its riders reach their destinations. Louisville is a thriving city, and as Senate Majority Leader, I’m happy to continue supporting new investments like this one for its bright future.”

TARC transports more than 12.5 million passengers annually, the majority riding to work or school.
