The New York Department of Transportation recently began construction on the $10.9 million U.S. Route 6 project, which will replace a bridge over the Metro-North Railroad’s Harlem River Line in Brewster in Putnam County.

The existing three-span bridge will be replaced with a single-span, steel girder bridge with a concrete deck 75-feet to the south. This shift in position will create a direct intersection with Michael Neuner Drive and improve access and connectivity in the village.

At the intersection of Route 6 and Michael Neuner Drive, crosswalks and traffic signals will be installed, and sections of both roadways will be resurfaced.

The route is heavily traveled, so the project also includes enhanced safety features such as pedestrian walkways with protective fencing on both sides and wider shoulders.

“We are so glad the state has started working to replace the Route 6 bridge over the Metro-North tracks in Brewster,” MaryEllen Odell, Putnam County executive, said. “A village that relies on foot traffic really needs safe pedestrian walkways, and straightening out the intersection with Michael Neuner Drive will help improve the traffic flow.”

Route 6 and the existing bridge will remain open during constructed.

Construction is expected to be completed in a year.
