The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) recently awarded 31 local bridge projects $40.5 million in state and federal funding through two bridge improvement programs.
A total of $20.5 million was awarded to 16 projects through the Off-System Bridge program. The program was established to comply with federal requirements to use federal funds for bridges not on the federal-aid system.
A total of $20 million was awarded to 15 bridge projects through the Kansas Local Bridge Improvement Program. The program provides funds to local public authorities for the replacement, rehabilitation or removal of deficient city and county-owned bridges.
“Programs that provide funding opportunities for local bridge projects are key to helping communities address infrastructure needs that might otherwise go unmet,” KDOT Secretary Calvin Reed said. “By working together, KDOT and local communities are providing reliable infrastructure that Kansans can depend on for years to come.”
Statewide, there are more than 19,000 bridges on Kansas’ local road systems with more than 5,000 of those bridges needing updated.
The awardees include:
Morton County was awarded $2.5 million for a bridge located east of Richfield.
Mitchell County was awarded $2 million for a bridge over the Solomon River.
Sumner County was awarded $2 million for a bridge over the C.R.I. & P. Railroad.
