Global passenger traffic grew in January at a rate consistent with December 2018, according to Airports Council International (ACI) World, reaching 4.8 percent.

Domestic passenger volume grew 5.2 percent while international passenger volume increased 6.7 percent.

Asia-Pacific’s passenger volume grew more than other markets in January, spiking 5.6 percent.

The North American market grew 4.5 percent with 6.1 percent growth in international passengers.

“Global passenger traffic growth remained robust in January but below the 12-months rolling average for the industry of 5.8 percent,” ACI World Director General Angela Gittens said. “Global air freight continued to decline, but at a slower rate and this needs to be seen in the context of last year’s growth and the current market conditions.”

The air freight market had a weak December, falling 1.5 percent, and dropped 0.1 percent in January.

Domestic freight grew 4.7 percent year-over-year in January with a 12-month rolling average of 4.2 percent.

The international segment fell 2.2 percent after dropping 1.7 percent in December.

The North America market grew 3.9 percent after falling 1.2 percent in December. The domestic segment spiked 6 percent while international freight grew 0.7 percent.

Other markets declined in January. Europe had the largest decline at 2.2 percent.
