New York will invest $70.4 million in bridge construction projects on Long Island, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

The investments will ensure access to communities on the island and will enhance safety.

Projects include $42.2 million in repairs to 31 bridges in Nassau and Suffolk counties and a $28.2 million project to replace the Walt Whitman Road Bridge over the Long Island Expressway in Huntington.

The Walt Whitman Road bridge has one southbound lane, one northbound lane and a northbound left-turn lane. It will be replaced with a wider structure featuring two southbound lanes, one northbound lane and one northbound left-turn lane. It also will feature an additional lane to provide space for a southbound left-turn lane and a northbound left-turn lane.

“I am delighted to see the investment of Huntington residents’ and businesses’ tax dollars back into our local infrastructure for critical bridge repairs and improvements, such as the $28.2 million Gov. Cuomo has committed to replace the Walt Whitman Road bridge over the Long Island Expressway, which will keep one of our most highly-trafficked commuter roads safe for years to come,” Chad Lupinacci, Huntington town supervisor, said.

Construction on the new bridge is scheduled to begin soon and be completed by the fall of 2020.
