The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) recently became the first agency in the United States to help its employees earn the Safety Certification for Transportation Project Professionals (SCTPP) credential endorsed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

A consortium of safety experts, now operating under the name American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), developed the SCTPP test using ANSI guidelines. The consortium’s goal was to identify core safety competencies that could serve as an international standard for the transportation infrastructure industry.

This information was used to develop a rigorous exam to test knowledge and understanding of the core competencies.

TxDOT employees will have round the clock access to online SCTPP prep courses. Access is courtesy of a partnering contract with the American Road & Transportation Builders Association’s Transportation Development Foundation.

The courses have been pre-approved for professional development hours in the 38 states that follow the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying Model Rules and also meet engineer licensing requirements in North Carolina, New York, and Florida.

In fiscal year 2019, 500 TxDOT employees will be able to take the examination.

ARTBA Chairman Bob Alger applauded TxDOT’s leadership and commitment to road work zones safety.
