Griff Lynch, Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) executive director, recently spoke at the Brunswick State of the Port, outlining the success of fiscal year 2018, which ended in June.

The port’s achievements include Georgia terminals handling 630,000 units of cars, trucks, and tractors. An additional 60 dockside acres will be added to Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro/Ro) cargo handling over the next year. This will increase car storage by 8,250 spaces.

Also, during fiscal year 2019, 250 acres of auto processing space will be added at Colonel’s Island Terminal.

“By tonnage, Brunswick is already the second busiest Ro/Ro port in the nation, behind only Baltimore,” Lynch said. “As business grows to fill our expanding terminal, the Port of Brunswick will play an even larger role on the global trade in vehicles and heavy equipment.”

During the fiscal year, Brunswick moved more than 590,500 units, or 1.25 million tons, of GPA’s total Roll-on/Roll-off trade, terminal operator Logistec handled 1 million tons of bulk cargo at the East River Terminal, and forest products at Mayor’s Point Terminal increased by 34.5 percent, or 35,953 tons.

The port sustains 10,800 jobs in six Georgian counties, a 20 percent increase according to the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business.
