A study conducted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) found that only five fatal accidents were linked to commercial flights in 2017, reflecting the lowest number in recent memory.

While only 50 people died over the course of the year from flight-related incidents, the total number of accidents rose between 2016 and 2017, reaching 88 incidents. The ICAO Safety Report found that with 4.1 billion passengers in the skies over the course of the year, the rate of 12.2 fatalities per billion made it the safest of periods.

The findings build on 10 straight years of reductions in fatal accidents involving commercial lights. The accident rate currently sits at 2.4 accidents per million departures, globally.
