The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) recently launched 113 projects on the state highway system that will fill gaps in pedestrian, transit and bicycle access throughout the islands.

Over the next 10 years, HDOT will invest approximately $360 million in multimodal projects. Approximately $170 million in projects will begin construction between 2025 and 2029 while $190 million in projects that will begin construction between 2030 and 2034.

The Priority Multimodal Network projects will provide affordable transportation options and improve connections between communities and include transit facilities, sidewalks, protected bike lanes, and shared-use paths. The purpose of the network is to focus resources and accelerate project timelines so projects are completed sooner than originally planned.

“This network reflects HDOT’s commitment to creating a safer, more connected Hawaiʻi where walking, biking and transit are reliable and affordable choices for daily travel,” Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation Director Ed Sniffen said. “Making an investment in the infrastructure needed to support multimodal transportation will help improve the quality of life for our neighbors and communities.”

The agency will host virtual public meetings for each county on Nov. 10, 13, 17 and 18 to present the network, highlight local projects, gather feedback and answer questions. Registration is required.
