The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently awarded 280 Airport Improvement Program grants to airports in 46 states and three territories totaling $1.1 billion.
The program funds airport infrastructure projects such as airport lighting, airport markings, airport signage, runways and taxiways. Grants are based on an airport’s passenger volume.
“As we continue to strengthen the National Airspace System, we are providing funding for airports to quickly put critical safety investments in across the country,” FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said. “These grants will allow airports to deploy VMATs (vehicle movement area transmitters), that provide our air traffic controllers with greater situational awareness of aircraft and vehicles moving on the airport surface. This is about giving our controllers the tools and technology they need to safely manage an increasingly complex National Airspace System.”

Twelve airports were awarded $43 million for noise mitigation projects.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport was awarded $30.7 million for runway reconstruction.
Shreveport Regional Airport was awarded $18.9 million for terminal expansion.
Mankato Regional Airport in Minnesota was awarded $11.5 million for a new contract tower.
Sixty-one airports were awarded $10.9 million to equip 3,000 airport vehicles with VMATs.
McAllen International Airport in Texas was awarded $2 million for a terminal expansion.
