The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) recently released data scores for more than 2,100 transportation-improvement projects.

The scores are part of the evaluation process and are used to determine which projects over the next decade will be scheduled and receive funding. Projects were scored based on several criteria including congestion, cost-benefit analysis, and safety.

Seventy-seven projects with high scores were added to the State Transportation Improvement Program for 2020-2029. Projects added to the program receive 40 percent of the state’s available project funds. Only projects in the aviation, rail, and highway categories are eligible for the state program.

A total of 18 aviation projects will receive $9 million in funding, 48 highway projects will receive $3 billion and 11 rail projects will receive $270 million.

Lower ranking projects or projects in the bicycle-pedestrian, transit and ferry categories are eligible for regional or division program.

Public meetings will be held throughout the state between April 30 and June 8. The public is invited to comment on projects and data scores.

Public comment and local input from division engineers and planning organizations will be used to determine the total score for each project in the regional and division categories and to determine funding.
