A joint venture between Tutor Perini Corp. and Parsons Transportation Group has been selected to design and build the $2.7 billion the terminal one redevelopment project at Newark Liberty International Airport, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced on Thursday.
The new terminal will span more than 1 million square feet, host 33 gates for domestic flights and incorporate modern design elements that enhance the passenger experience. It will also be designed to evolve and grow with the changing demands of air travel in the years ahead.
“There has been a continuous surge in the number of passengers at Newark Liberty, which last year welcomed more than 40 million of them,” Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole said.” This board action advances our commitment to address the growing needs of our travelers, which cannot be adequately met by the current Terminal A.”
The Port Authority Board of Directors approved $1.85 billion in construction and other expenses for the project, including $1.41 billion for the design and build agreement awarded to the Tutor Perini/Parsons joint venture. The redevelopment program is expected to generate more than $4.6 billion in regional economic activity, create 23,120 jobs and provide $1.9 billion in wages.
“Nearly $12 billion in our current 10-year Capital Plan is committed to modernizing our airports,” Jeffrey Lynford, vice chairman of the board, said. “With (Thursday’s) vote, we move towards the next phase of the Terminal One Redevelopment project to deliver a world-class terminal with 21st-century passenger amenities.”
The redeveloped terminal is currently slated to partially open in 2021 and to achieve full operation in 2022. Preliminary work is approximately 30 percent complete and construction is underway on three roadway bridges that will connect the terminal area to the local roadway network.
