Aviation generates $53.8 billion in annual economic activity in Tennessee, according to the recently released 2026 Aviation Economic Impact Study.
This includes airport operations, air cargo impacts, visitor spending and tenants and is a $13.8 billion increase since 2019.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) used the most recent available data to examine the state’s 76 public-use airports and off-airport air cargo facilities. The department analyzed on-airport jobs and payroll, out-of-state traveler spending, off-airport air cargo movements, and aircraft operations statewide.
The increase from 2019 highlights aviation’s essential role in strengthening business activity, the department said, expanding work force access, and enhancing statewide economic competitiveness.
“Aviation is a gateway for commerce, competitiveness, and community connectivity in Tennessee,” TDOT Commissioner Will Reid said. “From advanced manufacturing and healthcare to tourism and small business, airports enable employers to reach markets, attract talent, visitors and serve customers. These benefits extend well beyond the airport fence to every corner of the state.”
Other highlights of the report include that aviation supports 236,000 jobs with nearly $18 billion in annual payroll and 9 percent of the Gross Domestic Product is attributable to aviation‑enabled activity.
The state’s public‑use airports provide business access, rural connectivity, and visitor gateways.
