The New Jersey Department of Transportation recently opened the application period for the Fiscal Year 2027 Local Freight Impact Fund program. Applications will be accepted through Dec. 18.

The fund helps support projects that emphasize and enhance the safe movement of large truck traffic, rebuild structures that carry large truck traffic, promote economic development, and support new transportation opportunities.

Projects fall into six funding categories. Roadway preservation projects improve pavement conditions. Truck safety and mobility projects improve large truck access, routing and mobility. Bridge Preservation projects improve bridge ratings/conditions. New construction projects promote construction that supports freight travel. Pedestrian safety projects improve pedestrian access to freight networks, address pedestrian safety and promote equity for those without the option to drive. Pavement preservation projects renew the road surface and correct irregularities while preserving and protecting the underlying pavement structure.

To be eligible for funding, projects must be within the jurisdiction of a municipality and/or county unless filed jointly with an adjacent municipality and/or county, and must have a minimum 10 percent large truck volume within the project limits.

Applicants must submit a traffic study and provide a narrative and a map to demonstrate that a project will provide access to a port, warehouse distribution center or other freight node.
