The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) recently launched an intradepartmental body that will coordinate space policy activities on behalf of the department.
The Space Policy Administration, Coordination, and Execution (SPACE) Task Force will lead and coordinate a unified commercial space transportation strategy and implement President Donald Trump’s National Space Transportation Policy. The policy includes recommendations to coordinate space policy on behalf of USDOT, better integrate the airspace, streamline regulation and expand launch infrastructure. The task force will focus on bolstering economic competitiveness, strengthening national security and using innovation to secure space dominance against China.
USDOT Under Secretary Ryan McCormack will serve as chairman. The task force also includes experts from the Federal Aviation Administration and the offices of Aviation and International Affairs, General Counsel, Multimodal Freight Policy, Research and Technology, and Transportation Policy.
“Keeping America’s edge in commercial space is key to advancing the economic and national security of the United States, and thanks to President Trump, USDOT is empowered like never before to advance this national priority,” McCormack said. “The SPACE Task Force will develop and coordinate space policy to achieve the aims of the National Space Transportation Policy and strengthen American leadership in this vital sector.”
