As part of a fleet modernization strategy, Georgia-based Norfolk Southern Corp. and Wabtec Corp., a Pennsylvania freight and transit rail equipment company, have partnered to modernize 33 of the railroad’s DC-traction Evolution Series locomotives. The initiative will convert the units to AC-traction technology to improve performance, reliability and efficiency.
“This investment will improve reliability, increase efficiency, and extend locomotive life, helping us deliver safe, dependable service for customers,” Brian Barr, Norfolk Southern chief operating officer, said. “Together with Wabtec, we’re continuing to invest in technologies that improve fleet performance and maximize the value of existing assets.”
The ES44DC locomotives launched in 2004. Wabtec and Norfolk Southern have been collaborating on locomotive modernization efforts since 2015, and the recently announced program expands the companies’ partnership. Over the past decade, the partners modernized more than 1,000 DC-to-AC locomotive conversions.
Under the new program, Wabtec will modernize the ES44DC locomotives with AC traction motors, upgraded control systems, and advanced digital technologies, and will convert the units into ES44ACMs. The package also includes enhanced locomotive diagnostics and maintenance planning.
The initiative supports Norfolk Southern’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions intensity and build a more sustainable freight rail network.
Work is underway at Wabtec’s U.S.-based facilities.
