Pennsylvania will invest nearly $54 million into highways, bridges, ports, bike and pedestrian trails and aviation projects across the state, Gov. Josh Shapiro said.

As part of the Multimodal Transportation Fund (MTF), the spending will support 50 projects in 27 counties and are designed to improve safety, strengthen local economies, and enhance mobility across the state, officials said.

“When we invest in safer roads, bridges, ports, and transit, we’re creating jobs, strengthening local economies, and making it easier for people to get where they need to go — whether that’s to work, school, or a small business on Main Street,” Shapiro said. “These projects connect communities across the Commonwealth and keep Pennsylvania moving forward safely and efficiently, no matter how they get around.”

Created in 2013 as part of Act 89, the MTF was designed to stabilize funding for ports and rail freight while increasing aviation investments, establishing dedicated funding for bicycle and pedestrian improvements and establishing a dedicated fund for bicycle and pedestrian improvements. The program provides funding for investments into any mode through PennDOT’s MTF Statewide Competitive Funding Program.

The awards include $972,000 for Lower Paxton Township in Dauphin County to support the redesign of the intersection of Prince Street and Houcks Road; $545,000 for Allentown, to make an ADA-accessible bicycle and pedestrian connection between Trexler and Cedar Creek parks, and more than $645,000 for Avondale in Chester County to support the reconstruction of a section of Pennsylvania Avenue.
