NJ TRANSIT board of directors adopts operating budget, capital funding

The NJ TRANSIT board of directors recently adopted a $3.5 billion operating budget and $1.7 billion in capital funding for fiscal year 2027.

“We accomplished a lot in fiscal year 2026 by continuing historic investments in new rail cars and buses to modernize the aging fleet,” NJ TRANSIT President and CEO Kris Kolluri said. “Gov. (Mikie) Sherrill’s unprecedented level of state funding support for FY27 will allow us to build on this progress by continuing to invest in our transit system to ensure more reliable, efficient and modern transportation for our customers.”

Approximately 60 percent of the operating budget will cover costs associated with its work force while 22.8 percent will cover expenses such as materials, fuel and power, utilities, and outside services. An additional 9.5 percent will be for contracted transportation services and Hudson-Bergen Light Rail operation and maintenance.

The capital funding appropriation will provide, along with past and future annual appropriations, advance critical capital projects.

NJ TRANSIT partners with New Jersey’s 21 counties and others to fund community transportation programs. Program funding includes:

The Senior Citizen and Disabled Resident Transportation Assistance Program will receive $56.9 million.

Enhanced Mobility of Seniors and Individuals with Disabilities programs will receive $13.9 million.
