The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), North America’s largest transportation network, recently activated speed cameras at active construction zones on MTA vehicular bridges and tunnels as part of the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement Program. The program originally covered work zones on state highways but was expanded last year to include MTA Bridges and Tunnels.
Signs will alert drivers that cameras are posted ahead, and an unmarked vehicle equipped with radar and camera equipment will operate during work hours. The equipment will record vehicles driving more than 10 miles per hour above the posted speed in the work zones.
A certified technician will validate violations before citations are issued. During the first phase, warning notices will be issued. Later this year, during phase two, fines will be issued that also are subject to late fees. It will be $50 for a first offense and $75 for a second offense, if it occurs within 18 months of the first violation. Drivers with three or more violations will be fined $100 for each subsequent offense, if within 18 months of the first violation. Violations are considered nonmoving infractions and will not appear on driving records or be reported to insurance providers.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority serves a 5,000-square-mile travel area.
